Capoeira (cap·o·ei·ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art form disguised as a dance. It was created in the 16th century as a form of resistance by enslaved Africans and African descendants in Brazil who concealed this practice of self-defense with music, dance and acrobatics. Capoeira has transcended the globe as a tool for physical and mental training and spiritual well-being.
Capoeira Terreiro da Lua and Dendê Arts asked capoeiristas and friends in Greater NYC to join them in raising awareness and money for Amazon Forest fires and conservation. We wanted to show the collective power of our community and our interest in giving back to Brazil and to our planet. We successfully fundraised $695 for the Amazon Conservation Team!
